If you’ve never taken a dog training lesson before, the task can seem overwhelming. But here at Happy Tails dog training, we make learning as straight forward as it can be.

Should I Choose Board and Train Or Private Lessons?
So that you and your dog can find the perfect fit, Happy Tails offers three types of training programs: Board and Train, In-Home Sessions, and Private Lessons.
Each program offers expert training from Zoe and is packed with personalized value. So which option best suits you?
Why should I choose a Board and Train Program?
Board and Train programs are the most comprehensive training programs Happy Tails Training offers.
During a board and train program, your dog will stay with Zoe at her home. During their stay, they get to live and breathe the training life. While they are away from home, will get a solid foundation of obedience, proper behavioral habits, and confidence building.
If you want your dog to get a firm foundation of training, and if your schedule doesn’t allow you to commit to weekly sessions, a board and train program will be perfect for you.
How Long Do Board and Train Programs Last?
Happy Tails offer a one week, two week, and a four week program. In each of these, your dog will learn basic commands and be exposed to a variety of different situations.
If you need a program that lasts longer, let Zoe know so you can work out a plan that’s personalized to your situation.
What Does My Dog Need For A Board and Train Program?
Since your dog is going to be staying at Happy Tails for multiple days, you will need to pack some supplies for them to be comfortable.
The most important step is making sure your dog has had a checkup with the vet and is up to date on all their shots. Bring a copy of your shot record and rabies certificate when you drop your dog off with Zoe.
Bring your dog’s food bowl, a scoop, and enough of their food for their entire stay.
Don’t forget your dog’s collar and leash too!
Can I Visit My Dog During A Board and Train Program?
Leaving your dog with someone new is hard. That’s why Happy Tails offers weekly visits for board and train programs.
Seeing your dog during their program gives you the opportunity to see the progress they’ve made. And you’ll get to fill up on cuddles and kisses before your dog finishes their program! It also helps reenforce specific practices in training, as they have to compose themselves through their excitement of seeing their people again.
Just contact Zoe in advance to schedule your visit during your pup’s stay.
What Does A Typical Day Look Like?
First thing in the morning, your dog will stretch their legs outside on a walk. Then, it’s time for breakfast!
Next, they’ll have time to socialize and play with the other dogs on the farm before a focused training session. At lunchtime, it will be time for a walk and another training session.
The mornings are busy for the dogs, so everyone takes a nap after lunch.
Zoe will fit in one or two more training sessions during the afternoon before your dog gets a chance to relax with everyone in the evening.
Then it’s bedtime. Your dog will return to their crate, where they will feel safe and cozy. The next day, they’ll do it all again!
Will My Dog Remember Their Training When They Go Home?
Happy Tails Board and Train programs are not just about teaching your dog tricks, they’re also about making sure your dog remembers their training anywhere!
Before your dog goes home, you will get to do a one-on-one session with Zoe. She will teach you everything your dog has learned and help you with any other questions you have.
Once you’re home, it’s important to refresh your dog’s memory about what they learned. Just like humans need to practice habits, so does your dog!
If you need a refresher after your dog returns home. I offerIn-Home Individual Sessions.
What About Private Lessons?
Happy Tails specializes in private, tailored lessons that work for both you and your dog.
The most important part of dog training is understanding your dog’s behavior. Zoe helps you learn why your dogs do the things they do and how you can work with them to get the behaviors you want.
Not only will your dog learn basic obedience, but you’ll create a partnership that will last for years to come!
Where Will The Lessons Be?
Usually, your one-on-one training sessions will take place in public areas like a park or a quiet street.
Meeting in a public spot serves two goals:
- Your dog gets out of the house and experiences something new.
- Your dog learns commands in a public area with lots of distractions, keeping up with those commands at home will be no problem!
What Do I Need For A Private Lesson?
For the first lesson, bring proof your dog is up-to-date on all their shots.
Each time you meet with Zoe, your dog will need to have a well-fitting leash and collar. Pack your pockets or your treat bag with lots of squishy training treats. And be sure to grab doggy bags for those impromptu potty breaks.
Don’t forget your smile, and of course—your dog!
